Posture Check: Seated Twist

Picture 2: Aligned Seated Twist

In this weeks edition of posture checks, let’s look at the seated twist.

To the left is a common misalignment. The body is leaned back into the hand, like a kick stand.

Purpose: Spinal Twist
Stretch or Strength? Stretch

As the body is in utero, the arms and legs grow out in a spiral making rotation a very natural movement for arms and legs. In the photo to the left, there is no rotation occurring in the spine, other than some on the neck. All the rotation has been transferred to the arm.

In this photo on the left (Picture 2), the back arm is now pressing down asking the spine to get taller and allow for the rotation to move from the arm into the spinal column.

Try it and let me know what you think!
